Getting to Know: Scott Hay

Scott is one of our Trumbull coaches at the club. He’s been with us for the past 6 years and has a passion for teaching individuals of all ages.

Q: How long have you been a coach at Trumbull Racquet Club?
A: I’ve been a coach for just about 6 years.

Q: Do you have an age preference you like to work with?
A: It’s changed over the years. When I first started, I loved working with the tournament, more advanced players. But over the past 5-10 years I love working with the youngest players from orange and green ball levels who are 8-12 years old.

Q: What motivated you to pursue tennis?
A: It was more luck and the opportunities around me that allowed me to begin playing. I was in graduate school where I saw a guy I used to play with in undergraduate school. A year later, that guy called me to tell me he was opening a second tennis club and was looking to hire pros.

Q: Do you have a favorite stroke or trick shot?
A: A behind the back serve is always a good move.

Q: What is one piece of advice you would give another tennis player?

A: Keep it simple. This is the one sport where in every level it’s about who has the best basics and training.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote?
A: “When the student is ready, the teacher appears” Buddah Siddhartha Guatama Shakyamun
